 Being a Graphic Designer is something to put into consideration. When you start off, don't expect to be getting any jobs at all. Actually, don't expect to really go anywhere. Starting off is extremely stressful as the internet is so huge that it's very hard to find jobs. Eventually this won't be a problem, but the first 2 years of doing it will be the worst.
I've done it for about 3-4 years now. If you plan on going into the field my suggestion is to look around at others, see what's popular, why it's popular, etc. Take that all and make your own style. Many of the more popular themes and styles die off fast and may be overused by new guys.
The next thing you'll need to do is learn more than Graphic Design. Typically designers learn multiple different areas and stay to one expertise. I myself specialize in Corporate Identity, although I also do work doing special effects, logos, web design, and a lot more. Being a designer means you have to be ready for change and you need to be ready for some very long nights.
The paycheck is the main concern by many, so to address that, it varies. Many designers work as "freelancers" meaning they work for any job that really comes their way (such as I). As a freelancer, you have the obligation to work a bit more freely, however, the paycheck can be hectic. I may go and work on a nice project for a week, get a $2,000 paycheck, but not have another job for months.
The other way to work is through a corporation/business in an office. This produces a more steady income but it may only be around $28k starting, and even then, the business works as a freelancer itself. The good thing for working in an office is you don't need to pour hours into finding a job and marketing yourself, but if they lose work, you lose your job.
It's really something to look into, I enjoy it, but it's not for everyone. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me though. | |

each year there's like a 10% increase of job opportunities for graphic designs in each state or so, but the competitions is heavy!!! it's not a job where you can schedule your own work hours, clients gives you deadlines and you have to deal with their demands. if they dislike your design, they can easily toss you aside and go to someone else. but if it's something you love i would defintely pursue it even if you don't succeed. i think a good way to find out is ask yourself would you regret not pursuing a career in graphic arts ten or twenty years from now. | |

Hmph? I don't know either. I was thinking about being some sort of graphic designer as well but then it's like, I don't want to be glued to a computer screen all day, like bestestmister said.
From what my art teacher explained, you can make good money if you're really good at it. My cousin's friend makes tons of money as some sort of graphic designer but he's ridiculously talented. And when I go to those artsy-fartsy places, I always like to ask the artists those type of questions and they tell me that it's not stable but if it's something you love to do, it's worthwhile.
For me, I'm pursuing it as a minor because I'm just purely interested in it and I guess you really won't know where it (or anything at all) will take you until you give it a shot. | |
