* I typically talk about FreshBrain, education and technology. This time I branch into politics a bit. Just a warning *
I am pretty frustrated with the way UC students are dealing with the financial crisis. These are our future leaders. But they are not acting like leaders at all.
The situation is bad. There is not enough money to fund the schools at a reasonable level, so even after lots of cuts, they are going to have to raise tuition. And not just by a little bit. By a LOT.
So what do the students do - cause damage at the very schools that don't have enough money. Damage that will come out of the budgets that are already significantly impacted. And why? Because they think this will help the problem?
What do they complain about? Staff salaries. Salaries that are dictated by the market. If you want a competitive university, then you have to pay competitive salaries.
The issue is with the state. There isn't enough money. The UC system is doing everything that it reasonably can to solve the problem. A problem that they did not create. But a problem that they have to solve.
So feel free to protest. Better yet protest with the state - where they have done the budget cuts to the UC system. Get involved and find a way to help. But understand the problem. Understand what caused it. And don't make it worse by damaging UC property.
